A Strange Math Symbol Puzzle
1) First Possibility
The given pictures are the numbers as follows:
20 + 20 + 20 = 60
20 + 5 + 5 = 30
5 – Sqrt(2) x Sqrt (2) = 3
So finally, we evaluate the last picture as follows (notice that the last flower has four petals instead of 5)
Sqrt (2) + 20 x 4
= (80 + Sqrt (2))
*It looks like the All sunflowers have the same number of petals
2) Second Possibility
However, if we “interpret” the picture a bit more “informally” (that is, not taking those figures to mean unknowns as per Algebra) then it could be as follows:
20 + 20 + 20 = 60
20 + 5 + 5 = 30
5 – (2 x 1) = 3
So finally, we evaluate the last picture as follows (notice that the last flower has four petals instead of 5)
1 + 20 x 4
= 1 + 80
= 81
*It looks like the All sunflowers have the same number of petals (when I zoom in, I can’t be sure of the number of petals of the “two overlapping” sunflowers due to resolution so I assume all three sunflowers in the picture are identical)
Then in this case,
Answer = 81
Comment:
I was just concerned whether the two sunflowers drawn together (let’s call each sunflower as letter “y”) means which of the options below:
(i) yy = (y x y) = y^2
Answer in this Case
= 80 + Sqrt (2)
Or
(ii) yy = 2 x y (possible if y is a picture and not Algebra)
Answer in this case
= 81
*Sqrt (2) = Square root of 2
But,
3) Third Possibility
There is a third unlikely possibility if we look at it even more informally say as an IQ question as follows:
Note that when we zoom in, it looks like there is about 20 tip (of petals) which are “not” overlapping “fully” meaning those “tips” can be “seen” for the “two combined sunflowers”.
So, we pro-rate the sunflower value across each tip & assume that the overlapping area of tips has “no” value. Then,
20 + 20 + 20 = 60
20 + 5 + 5 = 30
5 – (20 x 0.1) = 3
So finally, we evaluate the last picture as follows (notice that the last flower has four petals instead of 5; the sunflower has 12 petal or “tips” each valued at 0.1)
(12 x 0.1) + 20 x 4
= 1.2 + 80
= 81.2
Then in this case (though “highly unlikely” way of thinking except if in cryptography or secret message writing to mislead other possible answers & hide it’s true value which is only possible to be decoded by a person who understands this “crypt key”, just saying)
Then,
Answer = 81.2
P/S: Since there is “no” formal rule for pictures in puzzles, even a fourth possibility may be constructed by a combination of the above say by pro-rating the value 5 petals in the second possibility above as follows instead of a direct proportion:
Let g^5 = the flower with 5 petals (its power or exponent is 5 since it has five petals; g = value pro-rated across each petal).
Then, g^5 = 5
So, g = (5)^(1/5)
Hence the flower with “4 petals” may be valued at g^4 = (5)^(4/5)
Yielding another possible answer:
1 + (20 x g^4)
= 1 + (20) x (5)^(4/5)
