A Probability question
Question
A bag of candies contains the following:
50 red candies
52 green candies
52 blue candies
50 yellow candies
87 orange candies
50 pink candies
1. What is the probability of randomly selecting a red or yellow candy from the bag?
Round your answer to three decimal places.
eg: 0.5555 would be entered as 0.556
2. What is the probability of randomly selecting a candy that is NOT red?
Round the answer to three decimal places.
Answer
1. Red OR Yellow candies in number = 50 + 50 = 100.
Total candies = 50 + 52 + 52 + 50 + 87 + 50 = 341
So probability of red or yellow candies
= Number of yellow or red candies / total candies
= 100/341
= 0.2933
=0.293
2. Red candies = 50 and total candies = 341.
So, NOT red candies = 341 – 50 = 291.
hence,
Probability not red candies = ( no. of not red candies ) / ( total)
= 291 / 341
= 0.8534
=0.853
