Basic Algebra Explanation: “How algebra works?”

Question

Solve the equation(5/12)y=3/4

Answer

Firstly, LHS = Left Hand Side. RHS = Right Hand Side.

(5/12)y = 3/4

So, rewriting, (5y)/12 = 3/4. Now LHS is a fraction with denominator 12. So, to compare RHS and LHS, we need first to make the denominator of RHS 12. Since 4*3=12, thus we change 3/4 to its equivalent with denominator 12 as follows : 3/4 = ( 3*3 )/ (4*3) = 9/12
So, (5y)/12 = 9/12
Now, by comparing we must have 5y = 9. ( Because numerator of LHS = numerator of LHS, when denominator of LHS and RHS are equal. )

Divide both sides by 5 ( or equivalently, you can also say multiply both sides by 1/5 ) to get :

(5y)/5 = 9/5, i.e, y =9/5
