Who is Jesus?

Who is Jesus?

A Beautiful Question in Verse below:

“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:15)

He is the ‘Anointed One’, the ‘Messiah’, the ‘Christ’ and much more:

“Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16)

Various Titles of Jesus Christ

– His Pre-eminence in All Things –

These names do not speak about creation but rather of Lord Jesus Christ Who has pre-eminence (first place) in all things.

“He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Colossians 1:18)

(i) He is Pre-Existent

Creation began from the “Beginning” mentioned in Genesis 1:1

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

Christ existed before the beginning of the “world” (‘heavens & the earth’) or creation itself:

“And now glorify Me, You Father, with Yourself, with the glory that I had with You before the world existed.” (John 17:5)

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

(ii) He is the Fullness of the Father

“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,” (Colossians 1:19)

(iii) He is the Image of the Invisible God

Firstborn over All Creation

“Who (the Son) is the image of the invisible God, First-born over all creation,” (Colossians 1:15)

(iv) He is the Creator of All Things

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16)

“All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” (John 1:3)

“He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.” (John 1:10)

(v) He is Uncreated

Speaking of Jesus Christ

“Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, He remains a priest perpetually.” (Hebrews 7:3)

In analogy (‘likeness’) to the ‘physically known Melchizedek’:

“And it is yet more abundantly evident if another priest according to the likeness of Melchizedek arises, who has been constituted not according to a law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an indestructible life.” (Hebrews 7:15 – 16)

(vi) He is the Word of God, God Himself

“He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.” (Revelation 19:13)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1 – 2)

(vii) He is God in Flesh

The Only Begotten of the Father

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,” (Colossians 2:9)

“And without doubt great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Timothy 3:16)

(viii) He is the ‘Great I AM’

“Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?”

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13 – 14)

“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

(ix) He is Equal with God

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:5 – 7)

(x) He and the Father are One

“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:29 – 30)

(xi) He is the Lord of Lords & King of kings too

“And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh:

King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:16)

In the Old Testament verse below, we see that the ‘Lord of lords’ is the ‘God of gods’ too

“For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17)

(xii) He is the One on the White Horse

Whose Eyes are like Blazing Fire

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.” (Revelation 19:11 – 12)

(xiii) He is the Son of Man

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.” (Matthew 25:31)

“For The Son of Man has come to save whatever has been lost.” (Matthew 18:11)

(xiv) He is the Son of God

“And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.

And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?” (Matthew 8:28 – 29)

“Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54)

“The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;

and He will reign over the house of Jacob to the ages, and His kingdom will have no end.” (Luke 1:30 – 33)

(xv) He is God with us

“Behold! The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).” (Matthew 1:23)

(xvi) He is the Everlasting Father

“For a Child hath been born to us, A Son hath been given to us, And the Princely Power is on His shoulder, And He doth call His Name Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

(xvii) He is the Light of the World

“the people sitting in darkness have seen the Great Light, and to those sitting in the land and shadow of death, the Light has dawned on them.” (Matthew 4:16)

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” (John 8:12)

(xviii) He is the Way, Truth and Life

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)

(xvix) He is the Prince of Life

“but put to death the Prince of life, the One whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.” (Acts 3:15)

(xx) He is the Morning Star

“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to all of you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.” (Revelation 22:16)

He speaks:

“And the one overcoming and keeping My works until the end, I will give to him authority over the nations,

and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken in piecesa—just as I also have received from My Father.

And I will give to him the morning star.” (Revelation 2:26 – 28)

(xxi) He is the First and Last

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)

(xxii) He is the Beginning and End

“Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.” (Revelation 21:6)

(xxiii) He is the Lion and the Lamb

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

“And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?”

And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it.

Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it;

and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:2 – 5)

(xxiv) He is the Bread of Life

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” (John 6:35)

“For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” (John 6:33)

(xxv) He is the Saviour of All Men

“For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.” (1 Timothy 4:10)

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3 – 4)

(xxvi) He is the Saviour of the World

“and said to the woman — ‘No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world — the Christ.'” (John 4:42)

“We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.” (1 John 4:14)

(xxvii) He is the Lord God, the Almighty

Yes

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

(xxviii) He is the Immortal One

“that thou keep the command unspotted, unblameable, till the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

which in His own times He shall shew — the blessed and only potentate, the King of the kings and Lord of the lords,

Who only is having immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable, whom no one of men did see, nor is able to see, to whom [is] honour and might age-during! Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:14 – 16)

“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.” (John 1:18)

“It is written in the prophets: ‘And they will all be taught of God.’ Everyone having heard from the Father and having learned, comes to Me.

Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One being from God; He has seen the Father.” (John 6:45 – 46)

“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”

Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

“Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father ‘?” (John 14:7 – 9)

(xxix) He is the Resurrection

“Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,

and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.” (John 11:25 – 27)

Conclusion

He has overcome the World!

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (Jesus, John 16:33)
